What do you think about this? Please comment as I’m curious to know what other people’s views are on this. This article about the ‘15 minute city’ concept in Paris being embraced (rather than the controversy in places such as Oxford) has been very widely read. Understandably so. Makes me think about how the residential developments in the Poole Quay area are doing this but there seems to be a lack of proper green space around the lifting bridges areas. Plus in Bournemouth there’s still far too much in the way of surplus shopping commercial space which needs to be addressed.

Paris has very good and cheap public transport unlike BCP. The UK is not business friendly, setting up small businesses especially retail is expensive, rent, rates, vat, tax, insurance costs, H&S costs, employee costs, unlike France the UK has a very well established online home delivery market i.e Amazon can deliver most things next day(same day is some places) therefore big competition, also they pay minimal tax……. I have not been shopping in Bournemouth for years and see no need to. Yes more and more people can work form home but more employers want people back in the office..many people who live in BCP work in other areas, London, Southampton, most of my friends do not live within 15 mins of their workplace. It would mean a complete culture shift, I personally would never want to give up my freedom to move about at will in my own vehicle (preferable a hydrogen car)

It's all in the culture. The UK population likes conspiracy theories, that's why half of the nation voted for Brexit (and the other half didn't :))

Oooooh Jeremy, I have a LOT to say about this 😂 Without dragging politics into it, I think it’s an attitude problem more than anything else. I honestly think that diversity is good for absolutely everything, and that includes communities. The concept of having a diverse range of housing, shops, amenities, and spaces all within 15 minutes is brilliant and should be embraced. However, over here, we have very strong opinions on what we like, so the odds of everyone liking everything within a small area are pretty slim. We’re too quick to complain about what we don’t like, and we don’t cope with variety very well 😂 When I lived in London, the difference within my postcode alone was massive, there was definitely a feeling that one end of the postcode brought the other end down, which stinks 👎

The concept is excellent and makes complete sense. Part of the trouble is that US led conspiracy theory nutjobs have co-opted the term and it now has negative connotations for some. I've often thought that to regenerate Bournemouth town centre, you need to have more people actually living there.

Great idea in principle but you have to bring people / society on board ,if you force this on people they will just reject any idea and you have lost any chance of buy in right at the start ..closing poole park is an example

Regional cities of the #unitedkingdom will distinguish themselves by standing up to the coercive pressures of financial greed under the guise of tawdry modernisation. Towers are not financially good news for the city. The developer makes profit which gets expatriated elsewhere. Towers devalue the city. Quality of life suffers and the city becomes indistinguishable from any other. Why are so many Chinese students very happy to live and study in Swansea or Cardiff rather than in Beijing and Shanghai? There are far more elegant ways to densify centres, where areas with a poor sense of place can be enhanced, mixed uses delivered and green infrastructure woven through the urban fabric. The cities who recognise this will be the ones which will attract future generations Z's. It will secure the cities longevity and ultimately capitalise on value which is not confined to 'financial' value. Rather it will include; 'social' value, '#environmental' value and 'built' value. They will be such great places to live, full of #beauty, #quality of life and #wellbeing. https://lnkd.in/dWkZPiDN

Take a seat … welcome to a very different City of London. A good read capturing the significant changes happening as the City shifts towards prioritising pedestrians, cyclists and the overall experience for residents, workers and visitors. “It’s actually giving people a reason to come and be there as a destination, as opposed to transiting through,” says Shravan Joshi MBE, chair of the City of London’s Planning and Transportation Committee. New projects include LDA Design’s vision, developed in partnership with the City of London Corporation and transport specialists Norman Rourke Pryme, for King Edward Square, a new green piazza north of St Paul’s Cathedral containing the Grade I listed tower and ruins of Christchurch Greyfriars. https://lnkd.in/eRU8y7pZSome interesting stats too. Today, 97% of the journeys that the City’s 615,000 workers take to, from and around the City are made via public transport, by bicycle or on foot, with cycling for the first time overtaking cars and taxis as the most popular form of local transport. The City wants to go even further, cutting traffic to 50% of 2017 levels in twenty years.Watch this space. Wonderful to see how the 15 minute city is getting momentum. Two things I would like to highlight that are key to a robust and #sustainable implementation:1) Helping small business to thrive is key to allowing the sense of community to build up.2) Promoting housing for all (poor, middle class, rich) within the #15-minute borders reduces inequality.

The controversy around "#The15minutecity" concept | A political battle between maintaining the #car-oriented model or implementing #polycentric and #people-oriented planning. In a recent interview with Carlos Moreno Dezeen, the worldwide urbanist and academic provided his responses to some politicians against the "15-minute city". He argues that the goal of his concept is to provide a polycentric city model where active transport, by new bike lanes and new pedestrian areas, and a mix of different uses and services take more place in the city. Conspiracy theoryA UK member of parliament, Nick Fletcher, said that the measures "will take away personal freedoms...As part of his plan to slam the brakes on "anti-car measures" UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunakrecently announcedthat he will "stop councils implementing" 15-minute cities."Cities supporting the 15-minute city goals"Along with Paris, the 15-minute city concept has informed policy in numerous urban areas around the world, including Buenos Aires, Chengdu, Melbourne, Shanghai, Houston, andEdmonton, among others. A good reminder that:* You don’t need skyscrapers to increase urban density* There are no such things as ecological/environmental towers* A large amount of residential apartments in skyrise doesn’t help with the housing crisis…At a time when Brisbane is re-zoning South Brisbane for high-rises, the absence of cohesive approach to medium density development will lead to more issues down the track. #activatedstreetscape #urbanplanningfordummies

Urbanism Carlos Moreno is a fan of the “15-minute city” so popular in France 🇫🇷.He said ““I bet for the next year, for the next decade, we will have this new transformation of corporation real estate. Businesses are choosing multi-use areas with housing, schools, shops for their office space now. The time of the skyscrapers in the masculine design is finished.” 🏢 🌳 🏡 See Helena Horton in The Guardian below ⬇️ Is the 15-Minute City going to prosper in UK or will we continue to resist the concept 🇬🇧 ?#sustainabilityleadershipSDG 11

A recent article in The Observer by Rowan Moore highlighted the contrasting approaches of London and Paris towards high-rise buildings. Paris's reintroduction of height limits and focus on quality of life have yielded impressive gains. As Seyfi Tomar, Broker, CIPS, RENE, BEng, ABR, I believe Toronto should implement similar by-laws for its main arterial roads to optimize space utilization and improve residents' well-being.Toronto's main arterial roads are vital for transportation and connectivity. By following Paris's lead and introducing height restrictions, Toronto can ensure more efficient use of these roads while maintaining a human-scale environment. The areas surrounding towering skyscrapers often lack character and vibrancy. Limiting high-rise dominance in Toronto would create engaging public spaces that foster community connections, benefiting pedestrians and cyclists and enhancing quality of life.Toronto has an opportunity to learn from Paris and adopt a balanced approach to urban development. Implementing similar by-laws for main arterial roads can optimize space utilization and enhance residents' well-being. Let's shape a thriving city while preserving its unique character. #opportunity #community #development #connections #quality #environment #london #transportation #paris
